论述题:
(1)According to Austin, what are the three acts a person is possible performing while making an utterance? Give an example.
答案问询微信:424329
A locutionary act is the act of uttering words, phrases, clauses. It is the act of conveying literal meaning by means of syntax, lexicon and phonology. An illocutionary act is the act of expressing the speaker’s intention; it is the act performed in saying something. A perlocutionary act is the act performed by resulting from saying something; it is the consequence of, or the change brought about by the utterance. Let’s look at an example:
You have left the door wide open.
The locutionary act performed by the speaker in his utterance of all the words you, have, door, open, etc., thus expressing what the words literally mean.
The illocutionary act performed by the speaker is that by making such an utterance he has expressed in his intention of speaking, i.e. asking someone to close the door, or making a complaint, depending on the context.
The perlocutionary act refers to the effect of the utterance. If the hearer gets the speaker’s message and sees that the speaker means to tell him to close the door, the speakers has successfully brought about the change in the real world he has intended to; then the perlocutionary act is successfully performed.

(2)What are the major functions of language? Think of your own examples for illustration.
答案问询微信:424329
The descriptive function, also referred to differently as the cognitive, or referential, or propositional function, is assumed to be the primary function of language. It is the function to convey factual information, which can be asserted to denied, and in some cases can be verified, e.g. “2008 Olympic Games in Beijing is a successful one”
The expressive function, also called the emotive or attitudinal function, supplies information about the user’s feelings, preferences, prejudices, and values, e.g. “I will never come to this restaurant again.”
And the social function, also referred to as the interpersonal function, serves to establish and maintain social relations between people, e.g. “How can I help you sir?”

(3)What is pragmatic failure? Try to find instances of pragmatic failure in the English used by Chinese learners of English.
答案问询微信:424329
e.g. “Have you had your lunch?” is not an appropriate way to greet a speaker of English around lunch time.
Another example of pragmatic failure is the way in which speakers of Chinese respond to compliments. When complimented, a speaker of Chinese tends to deny the truth of the compliment as a way of showing modesty, which is a much-valued virtue in the Chinese culture, as in
A: You speak beautiful English.
B: No, no, no. My English is still very poor.
